Dante Barksdale Lifetime Achievement Award
About the Award
The Dante Barksdale Award honors the important and lifesaving work of frontline violence intervention and prevention workers. These staff members establish and maintain trust with individuals through credibility which stems from their experiential knowledge. A core tenant to violence prevention work using a public health approach, these individuals are effective at influencing change within communities that have historically been harmed and mistreated by health systems.
In memory of Dante “Tater” Barksdale, the HAVI is recognizing a frontline violence intervention worker, current or former, that has demonstrated leadership and excellence coordinating across sectors to achieve impact results for the entire violence prevention and intervention field. This year’s recipient will be honored at the 2023 HAVI Annual Conference on September 26-28, 2023 with an award and a check for $5,000.
Who is Eligible
Nominees are current or former frontline violence interventionists who embody the work of violence prevention and are dedicated leaders. They represent the spirit and leadership of Dante Barksdale in coordinating across sectors to achieve impactful results for the entire violence prevention field.
NOMINATIONS
To be considered, please submit a nomination for the person being recommended by completing the application form and include the following:
Describe notable leadership qualities this nominee possesses and how they have demonstrated them
Describe how this nominee has successfully worked across sectors to achieve outstanding results in violence prevention
Applications will be evaluated, and the award recipient will be determined by a selection committee
ABOUT DANTE BARKSDALE
Dante “Tater” Barksdale dedicated his life’s work to the autonomy and authenticity of frontline work throughout the country. As leader of the Safe Streets Organization in Baltimore, MD, Dante worked tirelessly showing individuals that thought there was more than just one way to survive the streets. The impact of his work in the country is evident. Dante was shot and killed at the Douglass Homes in Southeastern Baltimore. The HAVI would like to honor his life and legacy by recognizing his peers who are also making a tremendous impact in their communities.
